Green Lawn's Ministry to the Homeless

We are excited about an opportunity Green Lawn is taking to share the love of Christ with the homeless in our city through a partnership with Family Promise. Family Promise is an organization whose main goal is to end homelessness in Lubbock county, a goal in which they have been very successful at meeting. Their program provides shelter, food, counseling, training, and mentors for 3 families at a time for 3-6 months.

Here is how you can help!

  1. Promise House Hosts overnight, 8 p.m.-7 a.m. (we currently have a few substitution spots we can fill now, but for the most part this will not  begin until 2018). Background checks will be required for this position, and complete training from our volunteer coordinators will be provided to you before the first overnight stay.

  1. Provide and/or Serve Meals. When it's Green Lawn’s week, we will need meals for 6 nights! The meal slot is from 5 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. Along with providing the meal volunteers are encouraged to play games, help with homework, and get to know the families better.. If you would like to help with meals, but might not be able to stay for the three hours, then there will be a box in the office where you can contribute financially.

  1. Teach a life skills class. This class takes place every Thursday night. It can be whatever you want to share with the families, just as long as they are learning how to do something on their own. Connect with Eden Rosenblatt in the church office to see when there are openings.

  1. Mentor. This is a new program to Family Promise which allows you to be involved with a family after they graduate from Family Promise. Being a mentor involves making contact with the family once a week, through phone calls (not texts), or meeting in person for dinner/ coffee, and continuing long term relationships.

We are very excited to begin this journey and see where God leads it in the future.
