God said, You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart (Jeremiah 29:13). Great promise, right? But the promise seems elusive to a lot of people. They pray. They visit a church. They ask their church friend about God, but He still seems far away. Does that sound like you?
Here’s the truth, in the words of the apostle Paul. He told a group of people in Athens, Greece who may have had the same curiosity that you do: God wanted people to look for him, and perhaps in searching all around for him, they would find him. But he is not far from any of us (Acts 17:27). Because He is Spirit, God really is not far from any of us. But it’s hard to relate to a Spirit, so God did something remarkable. We call it the Incarnation. The word simply means that God inhabited a human body when Jesus was born. In short, we learn who God is by seeking after and examining Jesus. The writer of the book of Hebrews says it this way: The Son shines with the shining-greatness of the Father. The Son is as God is in every way (Hebrews 1:3). So if you want to know God and connect with Him, you do that through Jesus Christ. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me (John 14:6).
So your journey to God will be through Jesus. Read the Bible, maybe starting with the Gospel of John. Ask questions of those who are ahead of you on the journey. Seek God with all your heart. He has promised that He will meet your there. In fact, from heaven the Lord looks down to see if anyone is wise enough to search for him (Psalm 14:2). Whether it’s helping you get started, or answering your questions, or setting up a time to study the Bible together, let us help you on your journey.
