God Calls a Covenant People
You will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel. (Genesis 35:9)
God had made a covenant with Abraham to (1) make a great nation out of his descendants, (2) make his name great, (3) give him the land of Canaan as a place for his descendants to flourish, and (4) bless all peoples on the earth through him.
Genesis continues the story of God's covenant promises to Abraham as they are fulfilled through Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob's sons. It is a covenant that will be kept, not on the basis of man's ability to live up to God's expectations perfectly, but on God's grace and set purposes to bless mankind.
